Have you ever caught yourself approaching time with God as an activity rather than a relationship? Hearing God through the Scriptures is about relationship. Longing to hear God’s voice draws us to deeper intimacy with God.
Learning to recognize God’s voice breaks through the barrier of our misunderstanding and skewed expectations. Here’s an example of what can happen as we read for relationship rather than simply for more information.
“The Lord God has given Me the tongue of disciples,
That I may know how to sustain the weary one with a word.
He awakens Me morning by morning,
He awakens My ear to listen as a disciple.
5 The Lord God has opened My ear;
And I was not disobedient
Nor did I turn back” (Isaiah 50:4-5 NASB).
Expect to Hear from God as You Read Scripture
Hearing God is easier when we come with the faith and expectancy that He will speak to us through His Word. It is tempting to approach having a devotional time with God (Quiet Time) as one more good thing to cram into an over-loaded day.

Without the Holy Spirit awakening our attention, we wouldn’t care, but roll over continuing our slumber. When we’re unresponsive, truth fades into the fog of a sleeping spirit. Meaning is lost in the murmur of countless thoughts muttering in our minds and a lack of concern.
